Broadcast Spawners-Larval Recruitment

In this picture you can see a juvenile Spanish hogfish Bodianus rufus (yellow and blue), several juvenile Bluehead wrasse  Thalassoma bifasciatom (horizontal stripes) and the young Sergeant major (vertical stripes) in the background. They are all very common platform residents virtually bound to this structure for the duration of their life. The fish are able to obtain all their nutritional requirements from the larvae stage through adulthood right at the platforms. The Bluehead and Hogfish are both wrasses, which broadcast their spawn to mix in the currents. Multiple males will surround the ripe Bluhead female right after she turns to release her eggs the males quickly discharge their sperm covering the eggs in a cloud of gametes to fertilize in the currents. Spanish hogfish mate in pairs.
