Stock Enhancement One
platform can service 9 large net pens (20m x 50m) and raise ~ 9 million fish to 1 lb in a
year costing <$1/fish. The total allowable harvest for both commercial and recreational
fishermen for red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico is ~ 9 million pounds a year. The
bottleneck facing marine stock enhancement, however, is the inability of U.S. institutions
to produce large quantities of fingerlings of marine fish. Most of the research efforts
into fish farming and stock enhancement in the U.S. have been directed towards fresh water
species. Elsewhere around the globe, most notably Japan, there have been numerous
successful efforts to spawn and raise marine species for stock enhancement. |
